LOWER COLUMBIA SCHOOL GARDENS
Cultivating the values of lifelong learning, sustainability, health, and community.
In January of 2016, Catlin Elementary staff members Shelley Allis and Cheryl Carson contacted LCSG about the possibility of starting a garden at their school. That same spring families, staff, community members and LCSG staff transformed the newly fenced 7,000 square foot area into an outdoor learning space and garden for Catlin Elementary students and families.
Staff members use the garden as a hands-on resource for students to learn in all subject areas. Students visit their garden once a week during lunch recess. They have taken ownership and responsibility of their garden by planning, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, tasting, exploring and learning about plants and how to take care of the world around them. In 2021 the brand new Lexington Elementary School was built and students who had previously attended Catlin began their academic adventures at their new school, Lexington. During the 2021/22 school year while Huntington Middle School is being renovated, the students from Huntington have adopted the Catlin garden as their own.
Volunteers are a truly significant and vital part of keeping this school garden (and others!) cared for and kept up. The summer is an especially great time to get involved (harvesting and watering galore!), but there are opportunities during the school year as well. If you're interested in volunteering or have questions about the garden, please get in touch via the contact info below.
