LOWER COLUMBIA SCHOOL GARDENS
Cultivating the values of lifelong learning, sustainability, health, and community.
The history of the Rose Valley School Garden is a very special one - it was started back in 2013 by then 3rd-grader Macy Grafton, and her classmates Addie Schierscher, and Gracie Gann - all who have since moved on to Coweeman Middle School. These students did all of the fundraising and work to get the garden started, with some help from parents and teachers, as well as the principal at the time, Dr. Mark Connolly.
As of Fall 2016 the garden at Rose Valley is thriving under the care and attention of students who come in during recess on Thursdays, as well as a whole class of 1st graders who spend classroom time in the garden each week. The garden is a hands-on resource for all students to learn over a variety of subjects, including science, math, reading, nutrition, as well as learning to care for the world around them. Fruit trees, blueberry bushes, raspberries, and an abundance of raised beds with annual vegetables make it a very welcoming place indeed. The Rose Valley Garden is a wonderful place where students thrive just as much as the plants do.
