Cultivating the values of lifelong learning, sustainability, health, and community.
Our small but mighty team has not been able to update this page in quite some time. Much of the info is still accurate, but some of it has changed. For more current info about specific gardens or our programs, please reach out to us at info@lcschoolgardens.org or call / text 360-200-8918. We thank you!.
In 2002 Kaiser physician Lee Ann Gekas took a 4 month sabbatical to help start Longview's first school garden at Northlake Elementary. Inspired by the likes of Berkeley chef and school garden pioneer Alice Waters, a visionary group of parents and teachers laid out a space where students, staff and volunteers now work and learn together as they discover how to grow, cook and eat fresh, healthy foods. The Northlake Garden has blossomed into a large (almost an acre!), thriving operation, with 22 raised beds, grape vines, raspberries, blueberries, a native plant memorial garden, a corn field, a pumpkin patch, a working greenhouse, a compost facility, worm bins, and a large fruit tree orchard. Northlake has become LCSG's resource and training center.
