LOWER COLUMBIA SCHOOL GARDENS
Cultivating the values of lifelong learning, sustainability, health, and community.
In 2009, 1st grade teacher Janell Bittner reduced her schedule to half time to spearhead a new school garden at Columbia Heights.
Together students, families, staff, and PTO installed 7 raised beds in a central courtyard in the front of the school. In 2011 they expanded the space by 200%, adding a shed, planting beds, curved paths, and compost bins.
Once a week kids come out to garden and cook with volunteers; every October they celebrate their hard work with a school wide harvest festival.
